1. Give a brief explanation of your topic and/or problem in the criminal justice system. There are many problems that contribute to the social and environmental issues of juvenile delinquency. Several factors are youths brought up in poverty stricken and gang infested neighborhoods, exposure to drugs, violence, physical, mental, and emotional abuse, no parental guidance and neglect. A large number of these children commit violent crimes and more than 700,000 are a part of gangs. 40 percent of the juveniles who are incarcerated in America are detained and locked up for minor offenses and technical violations. Researchers refer to genetics being linked to recidivism among serious juvenile offenders opposed to youths engaged in minor offences. This is an ongoing problem for parents, schools, communities and the criminal justice system which has become a dumping ground for troubled youth. The expense of incarcerating juveniles cost the taxpayers between $1.25 million and $1.5 million dollars for the operation of one detention bed over a 20–year time period (Ramirez, 2 008, para. 3). 2.
